Volume One
The Original Captain Marval |
Written and drawn by C. C. Beck
Cover by Alan Davis |
Hardcover: 208 pages
DC Comics
ISBN: 1563890534 |
$49.95

|
This delightful
collection reprints the Captain Marvel stories from WHIZ COMICS #2-15,
introducing Captain Marvel, Billy Batson, Sivana, the wizard Shazam!, and
more. Includes the famous "ashcan" edition of the first issue of WHIZ. |
The earliest
stories of the Golden Age's most popular super-hero
Captain Marvel may be almost
forgotten now, overshadowed by Superman and the X-Men, but in the 1940's
he was the best selling character of all. This excellent volumne contains
the first 15 issues of WHIZ COMICS. Classily drawn by the great CC Beck,
this book is a great introduction to a great character. The stories are
simple - an orphaned kid is given the ability to transform into the World's
mightiest Mortal. As Captain Marvel he fights Mad Scientists, Nazi's
& Venusian Frog-Men. Simple stories, but accessable to anyone. This
is Golden Age comics at it's very best. Anyone with an appreciation for
comic or American history would enjoy this. |

The Shazam Archives
Vol.2 presents some historic Captain Marvel tales, including Special Edition
#1, Captain Marvel Adventures #1, and the Spy Smasher crossover in Whiz.
The whole archive has some very different takes on Captain Marvel, with
Jack Kirby artwork on Adventures #1 and a more realistic approach in the
Spy Smasher series. While not quite as light-hearted as most Captain Marvel,
the archives is very enjoyable and a great addition to any collection. |

Power
of Hope |
Written by Paul Dini
Painted art and cover by Alex Ross |
Paperback: 64 pages
Treasury-sized
DC Comics
ISBN: 1563897458 |
$9.95

|
Powerfully written
by Dini, with staggering painted art by Ross that combines traditional
comic-book storytelling and the illustrated-text format of storybooks,
SHAZAM!: POWER OF HOPE finds our hero taking a direct hand upon meeting
a boy who has been injured by domestic violence. Deeply affected by the
encounter, our story shows just how human the World's Mightiest Mortal
truly is. |
From the fan-favorite
team behind SUPERMAN: PEACE ON EARTH and BATMAN: WAR ON CRIME comes
the third entry in the oversized tabloid format series that has revolutionized
comics. SHAZAM!: POWER OF HOPE marks the latest collaboration between Emmy
Award-winning writer/producer Paul Dini (BATMAN: HARLEY QUINN) and multiple
award-winning Alex Ross (KINGDOM COME, UNCLE SAM).
Perhaps no classic comic-book
character embodies the spirit of youth and optimism as thoroughly as Captain
Marvel — the wish fulfillment of every child who ever dreamed of having
super powers and taking flight. In a personal story told from the hero's
point of view, both young Billy Batson and his alter ego, Captain Marvel,
devote themselves to keeping hope alive by granting the requests of a local
hospital's children— in a sense, making their wishes come true. |
