Ezekiel Monroe Wilson

Page Updated Dec 2009

Return to Genealogy Home Page              Return to Nathaniel Wilson Homepage

The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, May 2009

Family and other researchers, please note the following changes: on 15 Nov 2008, I changed the numbering of the outline, below, to correspond to the other pages in this site. I apologize for any confusion that may have resulted.  Further, there's some new data here from Cousin Ruby Mae Pool I think you'll find interesting and some goodies on E. M. Wilson's land in Arkansas. And now in Dec 2009, I've found and posted quite a bit of additional census data on Ezekiel's descendants.

   SOURCES:
I started this page on the family of Ezekiel Monroe Wilson with info provided Mar 2000 by my 4th cousin, Patty Taylor (28.04 below).

Additional sources are the various census records which track this family through the decades.

In July 2003 I got to meet Patty and her husband Terry, her mother Ruby, and her nephew Ricky at the Taylor home in Walls, MS.  Later Patty mailed me much of her material.  Information from that mailing is printed below in this dark green.

In August 2003 I visited by telephone with Patty's 3rd and my 4th cousin Dennis Wilson of NC.  His father, Rupert Wilson, Jr., lives with him and is a source of much of his information.  Data I've received from him is printed below in this dark purple.

In October 2003, Cousin Jo Goodwin sent me pictures of the Buddy Wilson home in Beebe.

And now here they are in greater detail:

24.05--Ezekiel Monroe Wilson, b. 23 Feb 1825 [but age 34 in 6 July 1860 Census of Pence's Beat, Dallas Co., AL, so year of birth may be 1826]; [listed as E. M., age 46, blacksmith, in the 26 Aug 1870 census of Pence's Beat, Dallas Co., AL]; d. after Aug 26 1870; bd. in Beebe Cem. in a grave marked with only blank stones (this from Dennis' dad, Rupert Jr.); listed in both the 1860 and 1870 censuses as both a blacksmith and a landowner with real holdings in 1860 of $500 and personal property of $3800 but in 1870 with real property of $1600 and personal assets of $350; m. 11 Nov 1847 in Dallas Co., AL (Dallas Co. Marr. Records, Bk A, p. 41; marriage license, dated 11 Nov 1847 secured from Isom Gwin, JP) to Sarah Jane Cole (b. ca. 1830--listed as age 30 in 6 July 1860 Census ; [listed as S. J., age 40,  in the 26 Aug 1870 census of Pence's Beat, Dallas Co., AL]; d. after 26 Aug 1870; bd. unk., but not listed in the book Vital Data from Cemeteries in Dallas Co., AL, CAGS, 1989); at least nine children;

[Jo Goodwin Note: According to father's will, Ezekiel Monroe Wilson was in Arkansas by 1874, Pulaski, White Co. Have not found in 1880 census as of 18 Oct 2003. However, I did find record of a marriage for E. M. Wilson, 52, to R. C. Williams, 45, on 31 Oct 1878 in Lonoke/Pulaski Co, AR, marriage records.  This could be Ezekiel Monroe Wilson's 2nd marriage.]

[John M. Gwin Note:  This photo was found in the old Wilson/Gwin photo album inherited by cousin Barbara Ward.  It was indexed there by the album's original owner as Mary J. Wilson and Jane Wilson.  I had assumed that Jane was Ezekiel Monroe Wilson's mother Jane, but I could not figure out who MJ would then be.  Further, the lady seated did not seem to resemble "Grandma Jane".  I now believe the photo to be Sarah Jane Cole Wilson, seated, and her eldest daughter, Mary J. Wilson.]

[John M. Gwin Note, Nov 2008:  We have found evidence that Ezekiel may have purchased land in Arkansas as early as 1856. (see below)]

25.03--F. (Frances "Fannie") G. Wilson, daughter, b. ca. 1853 [age 7 in 1860 Census but not listed in 1870]; [listed as Frances, age 28, in the 12 Jun 1880 census of Cyprus Twp., Faulkner Co., AR]; d. after 1880 census; bd. with husband in Cypress Valley Cem., Faulkner Co., AR; m. 30 Sep 1868 in Dallas Co., AL (Dallas Co. 27.01--Stella O. Wright, b. Feb 1898 in AR/AR/AR [age 2 in the 18 Jun 1900 Census, Cypress Twp., Faulkner Co., AR]; [listed as Stella O., age 12, in the 15 Apr 1910 census of Argenta City, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR]; [not listed as living at home in the 13 Jan 1920 census of North Little Rock, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR, and assumed married and living elsewhere]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

28.01--Garland Wright, b. ca. 1915 in AR/AR/AR [listed as Garland Wright, age 15, in the 8 Apr 1930 census of Conway, Cadron Twp., Faulkner Co., AR, and living in his grandparents' home; I'm guessing because of his and Stella's ages that she is his mother]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

This Garland Wright intrigued me. Was he born out of wedlock?  Did the enumerator err?  I searched for him in 1920 to see if I could spot him with his mother--either Stella or Effie--and I found nothing. So I revised the search for ANY Garland living with a Stella and found one: a Garland GOODright living in the same town as Albert and Anna C. Wright: North Little Rock.  He is five years old (the correct age for our Garland in 1920) and is living with Robert and Stella Goodright and two younger siblings, Pauline, 3, and Albert, 1 5/12.  I believe this to be our Garland.
What happened to them before the 1930 census, however, is sheer speculation, as none of them appears anywhere--not Robert, Stella, Pauline, or Albert.

Wright, b. ca. 1900 in AR/AR/AR [listed as Belle F., age 10, in the 15 Apr 1910 census of Argenta City, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR]; [listed as Belle, age 19, in the 13 Jan 1920 census of North Little Rock, Hill Twp., Pulaski Co., AR]; [listed as Belle Jones, age 29 and divorced, in the 8 Apr 1930 census of Conway, Cadron Twp., Faulkner Co., AR]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. Mr. Jones; div.; at least two ch.

28.01--Martha Jones, b. ca. 1918 in AR/AR/AR [listed as Martha Jones, age 12, in the 8 Apr 1930 census of Conway, Cadron Twp., Faulkner Co., AR, and living with her mother at her grandparents' home]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

Living next door in the home of N. J. Lilly, 35, and Caroline Lilly, 24, is Mary Ann Rasco. We know that E.  M.'s aunt, Sarah H. Rasco, married Ezekiel Burdine Wilson, so this is likely E. M.'s cousin. N. J. Lilly is also a blacksmith, and at age 35 may be E. M.'s mentor under whom E. M. apprenticed. But why did E. M. choose N. J. Lilly? Perhaps Caroline and Mary Jane are sisters, and the apprenticing of E. M. would then have been a natural thing.

We're not sure who this is at all; however, that he is b. in SC, has the last name of Wilson, and is living next door to Ezekiel and Nathaniel seems very significant--he almost HAS to be related somehow, it seems. Let's look for him in 1870 and see what turns up.

Concerning Ezekiel M. Wilson's Land in Arkansas

[John M. Gwin Note, Nov. 2008: Ruby Mae Pool Marshall's autobiographical account states that her father's Arkansas property was "just east of Faulkner Co. and joined the Lewisburg Rd. on the South, Highway 319 on the north, and Indian Lake Road on the east, in the very northwest corner of Lonoke Co. in Magnes Township. The farm consisted of 80 acres, and they owned their property." In Nov 2008 I reread this account and did a Google map search of this area and located this exact site on the Faulkner/Lonke line due east of the town of Otto and due west of Beebe and Ward. This made me wonder if this 80-acre farm of her father's was some of the same land Ezekiel Wilson had bought earlier, so I looked for it and learned that he had made two purchases of land BEFORE THE WAR:

In the Helena Land Office, Document #6076 states that 40 acres of land were purchased on 1 Sep 1856 by E. M. Wilson, which land is described as follows: measuring from the 5th Principal Meridian, this land is the northeast 40 acres of the southeast 160 acres of section 9 of Township 12 south, Range 5 west, abbreviated NESE 5th PM 12S 5W 9.

In the Helena Land Office, Document #1812 states that an additional 80 acres of land were purchased on 2 Apr 1860 by E. M. Wilson, which land is described as follows: measuring from the 5th Principal Meridian, this land is the southwest 40 acres of the northwest 160 acres of section 1 of Township 12 south, Range 5 west SWNW 5th PM 12S 5W 1 AND the southwest 40 acres of the southeast 160 acres of section 9 of Township 12 south, Range 5 west SWSE 5th PM 12S 5W 9.

In Arkansas the point at which the 5th Principal Meridian crosses the base line is in the Louisiana Purchase State Park. A monument marks the starting point of the 1815 surveys for the Louisiana Purchase. A newly renovated boardwalk and exhibits lead to the marker. To get there, take U.S. 49 South of Brinkley to Ark. 362 (GPS coordinates of the marker are 34º 36' 20.4'' N / 91º 11' 28.8'' W).
Calculations that I made measuring 66 and 72 miles south and 24 to 30 miles west from this initial point place the township (where E. M. Wilson's property is located) just inside the eastern edge of Drew Co., AR, approximately, with section nine being close to where state route 277 crosses the Bayou Bartholomew, the town of Tillar being just a couple of miles to the east and the town of McGehee being about ten miles to the southeast.

In conclusion, this property is clearly NOT the same 80 acres that cousin Ruby Mae Marshall described.  However, in view of the postwar poverty in the south, one might speculate that perhaps Ezekiel Monroe Wilson sold the 120 acres described above and purchased the 80 acres Cousin Ruby described, her father inheriting it from his grandfather E. M. Wilson.]

The term TOWNSHIP has two meanings. First,
it is any six-mile-wide strip of land that extends
east and west parallel to a certain meridian on
the globe. These townships form the east/west
rows on a grid that covers the earth. In the
diagram above, Township 12 South is one of
these strips. (Each corresponding strip that
extends perpendicular to these is called a
"RANGE".)

Second, it is any six-mile-square box on the
grid formed by these intersecting strips. In the
diagram above, the orange square represents
Township 12 South, Range 5 West.

TOWNSHIP that is shown in the diagram to
the left as the orange square known as
TWP 12S, RANGE 5W.

Each of the 36 sections in a township has a
number. They are always numbered as shown
above.

Ezekiel Monroe Wilson bought three 40-acre
plots in this township: two were in section
nine (shown by the red and blue X's in the
light green) and the other in section one
(shown by the burgundy X in the white).

Dear John,

I love the way you have done your website.  It's wonderful!  Thanks for all the hard work you have done on it to share it with us.

I have thought for sure that we have to be related to Kathy Kemp ever since I talked to her for the first few times. There are too many names (Nathaniel and Ezekiel) that are in both families.

I have printed out your last letter and everything on your website.  How wonderful to have all of those old pictures.  Do you think you will ever be able to look at them?  Its such a shame to have the pages out of order with the index.  About 2 months ago, my first cousin, Kathy Pool Rodgers, found a box with my grandmother's old pictures in them.  Most of them we remembered seeing and had wondered what happened to them. All of the pictures had identifying names on the back mainly written by myself or my cousin Kathy when we were teenagers.  We are just a year apart in age and grew up a block away from each other.  Thank goodness we did that. Grandma died at age 94 back in 1989. I know I need to do it with a lot of pictures I have.  I made copies of the old pictures with my camera on a tripod.  They came out great.  We found a picture of my great grandmother, Alice Wilson Pool's, brother and one of her sisters.  What a relief it was to find them when we knew they existed somewhere.

Oh yes, I forgot to ask you this.  You mentioned the Methodist Church incident.  Is your family still Methodist?  We are. Alice Wilson Pool was Methodist and when her son Arthur and my Grandma, Blanch, got married, Grandma was Church of Christ.  Alice made her join the Methodist church.  I didn't know if it was because Alice had always been Methodist or if it was because she married into a Methodist family.  Alice's husband's father, James M. Pool gave the land for the Sixteenth Section Church and Cemetery in Lonoke County, Arkansas, back in the 1860's. I have Alice's Methodist Hymnal book from the early 1900s and a Bible presented to Wiley Pool from the Sixteenth Section Methodist Church in 1869.  Too bad there wasn't any family info written in it.

Grandpa Pool worked the farm and he and his family lived in the house with his parents until they passed away.  Alice had been an invalid for many years and Wiley had been blind for quite a while.  Mother and her brother and sister loved them dearly, although Alice ruled the roost and made Mother and her sister bring her the wash to inspect and do over again if it wasn't to her satisfaction.

Thanks again for all your info and organization to keep it straight.

Your Wilson fourth cousin,
Patty

Patty, thanks for the kind words.  Yes, I think we'll eventually get all those pictures--and many others--onto pages on the site for all to see.  Whether we get them all identified is another question!  But getting them online so others can help sort them out is not far away.  And with you, I hope we all learn the importance of carefully writing on the backs of all family photos so as to identify those in the pictures for future generations.

No, we're not Methodist, although we have friends who are.  When Dad was growing up in middle Alabama, they went to whatever Protestant services they could, and often it was a Baptist church.  My grandmother--Dad's mom, Adabelle Vardaman--was raised Primitive Baptist, and since his dad, James Bassett Gwin, died when Dad was only five, that was the denomination toward which the family leaned.  And when Dad married my mother, Dorothy Keeney, who came from a long line of West Virginia Baptists, things were pretty well set for how I'd be raised.

Dad and Mom helped start a Baptist church in the little community where we lived in West Virginia, and Mom's first cousin, LeRoy Keeney, a newly ordained Baptist minister, came to help get the church started, too, serving as its first pastor.  I became a Christian in that church, and so did the girl I would marry, Sharon Hamrick.  Years later, when I moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, I got involved in the local Evangelical Free Church, and when Sharon and I fell in love across the miles, I went back home to marry her in that same Baptist church, then brought her out here.  We've been "E Free'ers" ever since, and all three of our children were raised and became Christians there as well.

I'm so grateful that one need not be of any particular denomination to become a Christian!  We have Christian friends who are Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Messianic Jews, and many others.  Sadly, we also know many churchgoers who are not yet Christians--i.e., true believers, ones who are trusting the finished work of Jesus Christ alone (and not their own good works such as church membership) to get them to heaven.  And we're still praying for them all.

You're right, Patty--we are indeed fourth cousins, as the following table shows. [now located above in outline]

Family love to you and yours,
In Jesus,
John
